How It Works
Wood finishes and coatings are formulated at a specific viscosity, but real-world application often requires thinning. The right dilution depends on three factors:
- Coating type — shellac and lacquer need significant thinning for spray; oils need little to none for wipe application
- Application method — spray guns atomize best at lower viscosity (more thinner), brushes work with thicker mixes
- Temperature — heat accelerates solvent evaporation, so hot conditions need more thinner to maintain the same working time

- Dispose of solvent-soaked rags in a sealed metal container or lay flat to dry outdoors — bunched rags can spontaneously combust.
- Work with adequate ventilation. A respirator with organic vapor cartridges is recommended for lacquer and shellac.
FAQ
How much should I thin shellac for brushing?
At room temperature (22°C), thin shellac 10-20% with denatured alcohol for brush application. This gives a workable open time of about 30 seconds before the shellac starts to set. In hot conditions, increase to 20-25%.
What is the difference between lacquer thinner and mineral spirits?
Lacquer thinner is a fast-evaporating blend (acetone, toluene, etc.) designed for nitrocellulose lacquer. Mineral spirits are a slower petroleum distillate for oil-based varnish and polyurethane. They are not interchangeable — using the wrong solvent will ruin the finish.
Can I thin water-based polyurethane with water?
Yes, water-based polyurethane is thinned with clean water. Limit to 5-10% for brush application. Over-thinning reduces film build and durability. Never add more than 20% water.
Why does my finish get brush marks in hot weather?
High temperatures cause the solvent to evaporate before the finish can flow out and level. The solution is to add more thinner (increasing open time) or switch to a slow-evaporating thinner variant. Some manufacturers sell "hot weather" thinners specifically for this purpose.
